Regal Madison Square 12, Huntsville
This theatre opened on June 28, 1985
as the Madison Square 8, a Cobb 8-screen multiplex
behind Madison Square Mall. It was upgraded and became the
Madison Square 12 on May 22, 1992,
with 4 auditoriums added in the back.
Click here if you are interested in seeing which
movies were showing at
this location on the night it originally opened, and on the night it began
business as the Madison Square 12. Some previous managers:
Larry Corum (1988-1991), Maria Moon (1998).
Installation of stadium seating was completed on August 6, 1999.
This was the second theatre in the Huntsville-Decatur
area to have stadium seating in all of its auditoriums.
There are currently four auditoriums with digital sound (1, 2, 7, and 8),
with more upgrades to digital coming. Auditoriums 9-12 will be upgraded
to DTS and 3-6 will be upgraded to Dolby Digital. Many auditoriums have
had the Ballantyne Pro-35 projectors replaced with Simplex projectors.
A very important upgrade was completed in March of 2003. When built,
Cobb built only 4 screens with adjustable masking to handle both the flat and
scope formats. 8 screens
had 1.85:1-only screens, on which scope movies (2.39:1) lost
23 percent of the image on the sides. During the November 2002 to March 2003 time period,
this problem was remedied. Now, both the flat and scope
movie formats can be shown in all auditoriums without image loss.

The Day After Tomorrow
- Grade: -5 (Current grade weight : 0.8264)
- Image comments: Image lacked about one foot reaching screen's left edge. (-2) Center of image was 18 inches to right of screen center. (-1)
- Audio comments: Audio system either has speakers wired to the wrong channels or has the levels miscalibrated. From the auditorium rear, some of the main action sound came from the surrounds and was very right-heavy. This was noticeable more in the previews than in the movie. (-2) From the front of the auditorium, the problem was not as noticeable.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 40 feet. Screen width: 37 feet (scope mode), 30 feet (flat mode). Scope film, filmed in super35. 9 commercials were shown before the previews.

Haunted Mansion
- Grade: -6 (Current grade weight : 0.7285)
- Image comments: Left edge had ugly aperture shadow. (-1) Slight horizontal jitter was present, which was most noticeable when text was on the screen, but it also created some distracting motion aliasing in areas of fine detail. (-2)
- Audio comments: Digital. Preview sound was in SR and stayed in SR after movie started. The volume was very low. Sitting in the fourth row, I had to strain to hear some of the fainter dialogue. When the digital sound was activated, everything was fine. (-3)
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 28 feet. Scope film, filmed in super35. Screen has adjustable top/bottom masking. I don't know if any commercials were shown before the previews since I went in at 7:00 for this 7:05 showing and the previews were already being shown.

- Audio comments: Digital. Excellent.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 54 feet. Screen width: 40 feet (scope mode). Scope film, filmed in super35. At least one scene had anamorphic lens flares put in by CGI, which was incorrect for this movie, which was shot with spherical lenses. 5 commercials were shown before the previews.

The Medallion
- Grade: -6 (Current grade weight : 0.6528)
- Image comments: Jagged aperture shadow visible on bottom 6 inches of image and right 8 inches to 1 foot of image (completely black). Image almost went beyond the top and left masking onto drapes. (-4) Bottom of image was darker than than the rest (-2)
- Audio comments: Digital. Excellent.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 28 feet. Screen width: 24 feet (common width system with adjustable top and bottom masking). Scope film, filmed in super35. The credits of the movie contain outtakes. This print contained anti-piracy measures that were quite distracting at times. Patterns of dots appeared for a split second in some scenes. They are deliberately placed there to prevent piracy. The dot patterns can be used to identify the print in case a copy is made. However, this film had an overagressive version of CAP coding used on it.

Finding Nemo
- Grade: -1 (Current grade weight : 0.5736)
- Image comments: Slight fading across top edge. Left edge did not quite reach left edge of screen in places. (-1)
- Audio comments: DTS. Excellent.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 40 feet. Screen width: 29 feet (flat mode). Flat animated film. Pre-show music had no center channel. Trailers and movie were flat. Curiously, a scope Regal policy trailer was placed between the trailers and the movie. Cues to move the masking before and after the Regal trailer were present. After the Regal trailer, a preview of a scope Pixar movie for next year was shown, and it was printed in letterboxed form in flat format. From flat material to a scope policy trailer to a flat trailer with scope letterboxed material then to the flat movie was an odd sequence.

Erin Brockovich
- Grade: -21 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Badly misframed so that center of image was at least 2 feet lower on screen than it should have been. Some opening credits were unreadable, since they went off the bottom of the screen, and in some scenes, boom microphones were visible at the top of the screen (I could hear talk from many members of the audience about them when they were visible). This problem severely affected image composition. I went to the lobby during the previews and told the people at the concession stand (some previews had black at the top since they were hard-matted, and had a lot of their text cropped at the bottom and unreadable), but the problem was never fixed. (-15) Masking stops not set properly for flat films. Left and right edges faded out before reaching the left and right masking, about 1 foot on left side and 6 inches on right side. (-4)
- Audio comments: DTS. Excellent.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 52 feet, screen width: 36 feet in flat mode, although the projected image was not that wide (34 feet). Auditorium lights were dark during some previews, but came back up to the level normally used during the previews just as the movie started (improper cue), and stayed on for the first 45 minutes of the movie before they were turned off. (-2) A trailer was shown for Return to Me which has been out for two weeks.

- Grade: -11 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Projector aim off slightly (right edge didn't quite reach right side, and image went slightly beyond the leftmost edge of the left masking. (-1)
- Audio comments: Optical. All audio seemed to come from the surround speakers. No sound seemed to come from the speakers behind the screen. I was sitting 30 feet from the screen at the beginning, and moved to the back (54 feet from the screen) about 10 minutes into the movie to make the audio less distracting. I verified the lack of sound from the front speakers with 3 members of the audience that were sitting about 15 feet from the screen. The audio (the only audio) that was coming from the surround speakers was of fairly low quality and seemed somewhat muffled. (-10)
- Other comments: Auditorium was 40 feet wide and 54 feet deep. Screen was 36.5 feet wide in scope mode. Scope/super35 film.

- Image comments: Projector started with image misframed with center of image 3 feet too high on screen. Was adjusted during 2nd preview, and was still one foot too high throughout rest of previews and movie. (-2) Image was 2.07:1 (would have been 2.00:1 if masking had been pulled into fit the image). This will become part of the facility deduction for this facility if showing flat films at 2.00:1 continues. Masking set for scope, and this was a flat film. Proper image size is 1.85:1 for flat films. Image was lost at top and bottom. Left and right edged looked bad as a result of the masking not being pulled in. (-4)

It took 16 minutes from the time I entered the line for the concession stand (at 16:52) to get my popcorn and drink (at 17:08) , even though there were only 6 or 7 customers in line in front of me. Image aspect ratio: 1.94:1 . Pulling the masking in would have helped a little.

Muppets From Space
- Grade: 0 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Excellent.
- Audio comments: Optical. OK.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 28 feet, screen width: 26 feet. No adjustable masking! Fixed at 1.85:1 Flat film. Ticket stub indicated auditorium 7, but it was in auditorium 4.

Wild Wild West
- Grade: -3 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Image lacked a few inches touching left masking, and faded out before reaching right masking. Slight fading on top edge. Faded edges did not look too bad. (-3).
- Audio comments: Optical. OK.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 52 feet. Screen width (flat mode): 35 feet. Image width was 34 feet. This auditorium has adjustable side masking.

American Pie
- Grade: -3 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Image lacked a few inches touching left masking, and went past right black masking onto right curtain by a few inches. (Projector aim off). (-3).
- Audio comments: Optical. OK.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 40 feet, screen width (flat mode): 29 feet. This auditorium has adjustable side masking.

- Grade: 0 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Excellent.
- Audio comments: Optical. OK.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 28 feet. Screen width: 26 feet. No adjustable masking (1.85:1 only). Flat film. Stadium seating completed in this auditorium (and in all auditoriums 1-8).

10 Things I Hate About You
- Grade: -3 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Slight fading on top edge. Left edge went beyond left screen border, past black area, onto side curtain. (-2) Framing seemed very tight. At one point, subtitles (English translation of some French dialogue) went off the bottom of the screen a slight bit, making me wonder if the screen was really wider than 1.85:1 and cropping to the wider ratio was occurring (losing some of top and bottom). Film was only misframed with image 3 inches too low on screen (acceptable), which is not enough to account for the subtitle cropping I mentioned.
- Audio comments: Optical. OK.
- Other comments: Exit sign improper: threw too much light onto right side of screen, making right edge look bad because of shadow from side masking. (-1) Flat (1.85:1) film.
- Problem codes: A2 E1
1999/04/09 16:30, Auditorium 10
Go
- Grade: -12 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Fading on left, right, and bottom edges. Left and right screen edges were not covered with the normal black masking, and I could see the edges of the screen, and the way it was fastened on the sides. (-5) Shutter mechanism allowed light to pass while film was being moved, causing slight ghosting in the bottom half of the movie, noticeable in dark scenes when bright objects were present. (-4) Something from the booth was illuminating a rectangular area roughly 4 feet in height in the upper left side of the screen, noticeable in dark scenes. (-1) Image off center one foot to left (on screen) within aperture. (-1) This was a scope print, and it was shown on a fixed-sized screen designed for flat films only. (see facility deduction in final rating for this theatre). It was super35. How do I know this? The egg-shaped (instead of circular) reel cue marks gave it away, not to mention the chopped titles of some of the previews.
- Audio comments: Optical. When bass was present in the audio, significant vibrations could be heard. (-1)
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 28 feet. Screen width: 27 feet. No movable masking at top or sides. What really gets me is that in one of their operational auditoriums with side masking, auditorium 1, a flat film was being shown, while a scope film was being shown in auditorium 10 that lacks the masking. I just don't understand this place.

Rugrats
- Grade: -4 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Masking set for scope. Flat film. Left and right edges not very sharp, since masking was not pulled in properly. Slight fading on top edge. (-4)
- Audio comments: DTS (I guess). OK. No DTS trailer was played, and the newspaper ad did not indicate DTS, but this is one of the two auditoriums at this location with DTS.
- Other comments: Auditorium width: 54 feet. Screen width: 40 feet (scope), image width was 33 feet for this flat film. I suppose that the masking should have pulled in to make the screen 32 feet wide.

Wrongfully Accused
- Grade: -1 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Excellent, although I could never determine if the screen was 1.85:1 or wider, like 2.00:1. It seemed wider, and the top and bottom looked tightly cropped.
- Audio comments: Optical. OK.
- Other comments: There was an extremely noisy ceiling fan in this auditorium. It could be heard during quiet scenes. (-1) Flat film, auditorium width 40 feet, screen width (flat) 29 feet.
- Problem codes: N1
1998/04/29 21:50, Auditorium 7
City of Angels
- Grade: -3 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Aperture plate: Picture, at right bottom of screen, was 4 inches above bottom of screen, and bottom edge was unclean looking. Right edge was slightly unclean, too. (-3)
- Audio comments: DTS. Excellent.
- Other comments: Theatre was 52 feet wide with a screen of width 38 feet (in scope mode).

The Object of My Affection
- Grade: -9 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Excessive jitter was noticeable during some scenes. It was especially noticeable when titles were shown, and when the credits were rolling. (-4) Top edge was unclean. (-2)
- Audio comments: Optical. Mild static-like distortion during most of the movie. (-3)
- Other comments: Flat film.

Good Will Hunting
- Grade: -2 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: At several points during this movie (every 20 to 30 minutes) the image became jittery for 2 to 3 minutes, then would be stable again the rest of the time. (-2)
- Audio comments: Optical. OK.
- Other comments: Flat film.

Flubber
- Grade: -30 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Image was very jittery. During the previews and the entire movie, the image was not steady, constantly making small vertical movements. The image kept going in and out of focus slightly during the movie, also, and people in the seats around me noticed it and were complaining about it, too. This was the worst movie for the vertical jitter problem at Madison Square 12 that I'd ever seen. This movie was a real nuisance to watch. (-15)
- Audio comments: Optical. All audio came from the left, and possibly the center channel. There was no right front audio during the previews and entire movie, making the audio sound very unbalanced. (-10)
- Other comments: This movie was started late and seating was not available before the scheduled time, causing a large crowd of people to have to wait in the lobby, which was very hot, for 15 to 20 minutes. Some customers got quite angry about this and decided to see different movies as a result. (-5)

Rocket Man
- Grade: -35 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: 2/3 into the movie, the movie began showing serious vertical vibration, with a vertical ghost image, which was superimposed roughly 1 foot above the normal image (on a screen approximately 14 feet high). This problem remained throughout the rest of the movie. When this problem started, the projector itself began making extra noise, sounding as if it were running very roughly, and could be heard down in the seating area. (-35)
- Audio comments: Optical. Lip sync was off by several seconds during one part of the movie after the projector started acting up, related to the image problem.
- Other comments: Flat film.

Leave it to Beaver
- Grade: -35 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Framing problem - During the last 25% of the film, the frame boundary moved up into the bottom of the picture. Since this was a 1.85:1 sized movie, most of the image on the screen was not supposed to be on the screen. Less than half of the intended image was being projected onto the screen, causing roughly half (or more) of the top of the intended image to be chopped off (most people were cut off above the neck!). This problem occurred at a splice point, and remained through the rest of the movie. (-35)

Contact
- Grade: -15 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Framing problem - During the opening credits and during most of the travel through the worm hole scene, the frame boundary moved to the exact middle of the picture (2 perforations off). This made the top of the image occupy the lower half of the screen and the bottom of the image occupy the upper half. Both times, it seemed to happen at a splice point. (-15)

- Grade: -1 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)

Space Jam
- Grade: -10 (Current grade weight : 0.0000)
- Image comments: Excellent.
- Audio comments: DTS. Excellent.
- Other comments: Roughly 10 minutes into the movie, the projector was shut off and the film was restarted, making everyone watch all the previews again. This was due to a significant percentage of the people being directed to the wrong auditorium for our particular showing of the movie. The problem occurred because there were two auditoriums side by side showing the movie at different times, one DTS and one not DTS. (-10) Flat film.

- Image comments: Most of the previews were shown squeezed in by a factor of 2:1 before the projectionist changed the setup to match the scope film format. (-2) The movie itself, which had an aspect ratio of 2.39:1, was shown in this auditorium on a 1.85:1 sized screen with nearly one fourth of the image chopped off on the sides.
